Our washing machines can handle more than just clothes and bed linens? Here are some surprising items you can clean in our washing machine.
1. Pillows
You can wash most pillows in a washing machine, including those filled with down or synthetic materials. Use a gentle cycle with mild detergent and add a couple of tennis balls to the drum to help keep the pillows fluffy. Make sure to dry them thoroughly to prevent mould.
2. Doonas
You can wash cotton, down as well as woollen doonas in the washing machine. For woollen doonas, keep the temperature below 40 degrees. Cotton and down doonas can handle a warmer setting.
3. Ski gear
If your ski clothes can be machine washed, use cold or cool water and the delicate cycle with a low spin speed. Use a gentle detergent or one that is specially formulated for waterproof outerwear. Don’t fill the machine and we’d recommend only washing two garments at a time. This will result in a better wash and a cleaner garment. Remember to wash similar colours and fabrics together. And another tip – don’t use fabric softener. This will clog the pores in the fabric, affecting how breathable the fabric is.
4. Stuffed animals
Most stuffed animals can be washed in the machine to keep them clean and fresh. Place them in a pillowcase or laundry bag to protect them and wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Allow them to air dry to maintain their shape.
5. Reusable shopping bags
Reusable shopping bags can harbor bacteria from food spills and contact with various surfaces. Wash them regularly in the machine to keep them sanitary. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and hang them to dry.
6. Yoga mats
Yoga mats can get pretty grimy with regular use. If your mat is machine-washable, roll it loosely and place it in the washing machine. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Allow it to air dry thoroughly before rolling it back up.
7. Car floor mats
Rubber and fabric car floor mats can be cleaned in the washing machine. For rubber mats, use a gentle cycle and cold water with a small amount of detergent. Fabric mats can be washed on a regular cycle. Air dry both types thoroughly before placing them back in your car.
8. Oven mitts and pot holders
Oven mitts and pot holders can get dirty and greasy over time. Toss them in the washing machine on a regular cycle with your regular detergent. Dry them thoroughly before using them again.
9. Pet beds
Pet beds can accumulate dirt, hair, and odors. Most pet beds have removable covers that can be washed in the machine. Use a gentle cycle with pet-safe detergent and dry them completely to avoid mold and mildew.
10. Sports gear
Items like shin guards, knee pads, and even some helmets can be washed in the machine. Place them in a laundry bag and use a gentle cycle with cold water. Air dry them thoroughly to prevent damage.
11. Puffer Jackets
Down-filled, polyester, and quilted puffers can all be washed in the washing machine. Treat the collar and sleeves with a stain remover if necessary and then wash on a cold or warm cycle.
12. Canvas runners
Load up your canvas sneakers all in the washing machine! You’ll be amazed at the results. Remove the inner soles and place them in a mesh bag, add detergent and wash at a warm temperature.
Final tips
Before washing any of these items, always check the care labels for specific washing instructions. Use mild detergent and cold water whenever possible to avoid damage.
